Paulie is a New York based theatre artist, an entertainer at heart with a love for his city, fabulous food, and even better melodies. There is something about connecting with a live audience that thrills him, whether it be singing a great song (new or old), performing a great soliloquy, telling a riotous joke, or simply playing the hell of out of your instrument, it is an ultimately satisfying experience. I’d love to have a career where I can constantly lose myself to audiences in many facets. I was born in Buzau, Romania an adopted into a Sicilian/American family in Staten Island then after raised in western Long Island. Those with Sicilian parents KNOW that there is always drama and opinion in the household- that being said, I became accustomed to all things LOUD and it reflects in my characters, my lyrics and my personality, and as I always say loud isn’t a volume, it’s a tone. It took school to find subtleties in my work. I spent four years at Long Island University as a BFA Musical Theatre Student, where I really found an incredible passion and understanding for actors work. The program was a Suzuki acting based training -rigorous- but so VERY important to my development as an actor. I played some great parts in undergrad, including Sir Toby in Twelfth Night, Angel in Rent, and a Leading Player in a devised musical Suzuki piece called Conditions of Love: Shakespeare meets Sondheim, which I also music directed. It was done at The Space 52 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2014. I hate to put myself in a box when it comes to myself as an actor- musicals, plays (new or old), Shakespeare, Greek- it ALL is appealing to work on to me. During my time at LIU I also found that my ramblings at the piano and short scenes I’d been writing for years may have been useful all along! There was a submission to a new works project in my program and so I pulled together a show idea I’d been cooking up called Daniel: an ordinary Tragedy, a musical about a deluded musician and his abusive relationship. When it was accepted to the festival I worked on it during school for the next two years- it was accepted as a ANMT New Voices Finalist in Los Angeles where portions of the show were workshopped. A year after that I was acting in, and self producing the show in another workshop during the summer where I used one of the theatre’s at LIU. My senior year I applied to the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program on a whim and after a long application to my surprise I was accepted as a bookwriter/lyricist. I had an incredibily wonderful experience here- as it was the first time I really felt like a writer around other writers. I met a close and dear collaborator of mine during this time, Dak Van Vranken- we wrote out thesis musical together, an exceedingly Sicilianu musical adaptation of King Lear called Mamma Laudicina. I also find tremendous joy in writing a song at the piano and have done a fair share of cabaret work both on stage and behind the piano. I’m continuing to work on new musicals, new songs, and as a musical director/accompanist on Long Island. Take a look around my site and hopefully you can get a taste of the kind of entertainer Paulie Pecorella IS.
